Community Run Group – Starting Wednesday 15th January

We’re excited to announce that we’ll soon introducing two community run groups with the help and guidance of experienced runner and Horwich Harriers coach Michelle Mortimer.

Michelle will be leading the two groups which will run on Wednesday evenings from 18:00 – 19:00 and Friday afternoons from 12:00 – 13:00. Setting off from the Arena main reception participants will head out in to the local area as a group building your fitness and confidence each week. Group runners will work towards achieving further distances as they progress each week.

There’s no membership or pay and play fee, Community run group is free and open to everybody.  All abilities are welcome and no previous running experience is required.

What are the benefits of running?

1. Running Improves Your Health
Believe it or not, running is actually a great way to increase your overall level of health. Research shows that running can raise your levels of good cholesterol while also helping you increase lung function and use. In addition, running can also boost your immune system.

2. Weight Loss
Running is one of the best forms of exercise for losing or maintaining a consistent weight. You will find that it is a leading way to burn off extra calories and that it is the second most effective exercise in terms of calories burned per minute, following only after cross country skiing.

5. It Relieves Stress
Stress can actually cause a number of health and mood problems. It can also diminish appetite and sleep quality. When you run, you force your body to exert excess energy and hormones. Running also helps to reduce your chances of developing tension headaches.

6. Running has the Power to Eliminate Depression
When you are depressed, the last thing you likely want to do is to get up and go for a run. Yet you will find that after only a few minutes of running, your brain will start to secrete hormones that naturally improve your mood. In fact, there are few things in the world that can better or more rapidly treat depression than exercise such as running. It is also a fantastic sociable activity.

Running is incredibly beneficial to the body, mind and spirit. You will find that even short runs can leave you feeling more energized, more focused and better able to enjoy all that life has to offer.

Be Inspired – Phil Lyon

In our first ‘Be Inspired’ feature of 2020, we speak to Phil Lyon, a fairly new member to the gym, but a member who has achieved a lot in in less than a year.

Phil had been looking to join a gym since 2015. However, much of his time was spent looking after his sick wife, limiting his exercise time, which led to an increase in weight. Tragically, his wife died in early 2019.

Phil’s decision to change his lifestyle came midway through 2019 when he got tickets to an event and upon walking up steps to the event, realised he was more out of breath than he should have been. This led to a change of diet in May and joining Bolton Arena Gym in June, after a recommendation from a close friend.

Through joining our gym, having one-to-one sessions with our instructors and changing his diet, Phil said that the gym has helped him “tremendously”, going on to say that he feels mentally fitter as well as physically fitter, with the increase in exercise helping reduce a pain in one of his knees.

Phil described his gym journey as a “life changer”, as this has helped him to lead a more active lifestyle. One aspect of his outside life that it has changed is that he now walks to more places instead of driving and feels the benefits of doing so.

We asked Phil if he had any advice to people who may be apprehensive about joining a gym. Phil admitted to being apprehensive himself about joining as he had never been in a gym before. However, the friendly staff, who are always on hand to give advice as well as the fellow gym members really helped him settle in.

Bolton Arena are recruiting a casual fitness instructor to join our well-established reputable gym in Horwich, Bolton.

The successful applicant will become part of a hardworking, sociable gym team. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who will go above and beyond to deliver an excellent level of service to our members. As a fitness instructor you will:

– Assist the Gym Team in delivering the highest possible standards to members.

– Carry out new member inductions, programme reviews and one to one training sessions.

– Focus on assisting our members in achieving their goals and getting the most out of their membership.

– Work as part of a team to ensure the gym floor and studio cleanliness standards remain impeccable.

– Love sports, fitness and the leisure industry, and be able to build relationships with members quickly.

Applicants must hold a minimum Level 2 qualification in Health & Fitness Instructing and ideally have recent demonstrable experience of working in a Health & Fitness Suite. Desirable applicants will also have/be working towards a Level 3 Health & Fitness qualification. Other course requirements will be looked into on an individual basis and training provided to complete the job role.

New Virtual Class – Les Mills Grit – Starting Monday 6th Jan

As of Monday 6th January 2020, Bolton Arena Gym are introducing a new Les Mills virtual class to our fitness timetable.

GRIT will come in to replace our virtual Body Combat classes and will run at the following times:

Grit is a 30-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout, designed to improve strength, cardiovascular fitness and build lean muscle. This workout uses barbell, weight plate and bodyweight exercises to blast all major muscle groups. Les Mills Grit takes cutting-edge HIIT and combines it with powerful music and inspirational coaches who will be down on the floor with you, motivating you to go harder to get fit, fast. Grit joins our existing Les Mills virtual classes, BodyPump, BodyBalance, CXWorx, RPM and Sprint. Wagamama Become Football League Sponsor

We’re excited to announce Wagamama as the new Wednesday night football league sponsor from January 2020.

Teams participating in the ‘Arena Leagues’ Wednesday 5-A-Side Men’s league, will now be competing for some brilliant prizes, as we reveal new league sponsors Wagamama.

The British restaurant chain, which serves Asian style food, based on Japanese culture, has recently opened on Middlebrook Retail Park, proving very popular with visitors of the retail park. League winning teams will receive a free meal for each team member along with additional prizes for “Player of the Month and “Goalkeeper of the Month”

Be Inspired – Gareth Mann

In our latest edition of ‘Be Inspired’, we talked to Gareth Mann, a member of Bolton Arena Gym since 2013.

Gareth talked us through a range of topics from his weight loss journey to his achievements as a result of his increased level of fitness after training at Bolton Arena Gym.

Over the past 4 and a half years, Gareth has lost over 5 stone and credited our fitness instructors for helping him achieve this. A change of diet and training guidance from our instructors are the 2 major factors in Gareth’s weight loss.

As Gareth has been a member of other gyms, we asked him what makes Bolton Arena Gym stand out. The vast range of equipment and the fact you don’t have to wait to get on anything, with particular reference to our free weights area were the standout points from his response.

When asked what advice he would give to other people who were looking to lose weight, Gareth said to “stick with it and don’t give up. The best results always take time to achieve”.

After starting his weight loss journey with us, this has led Gareth to go on to make several achievements outside of the gym. He runs the Greater Manchester 10k every year whilst also raising money for charities such as Christie’s and Parkinson’s in the form of other 10ks. Next year Gareth is raising his bar even higher as he is currently training for the 2020 Manchester Marathon.

Gareth’s weight loss has also benefitted his personal life, he has become more confident, which has enabled him to focus more. Stress reduction and an increase in a balance in his life were also benefits that he has reaped since training at Bolton Arena Gym.
