What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on balance, posture, strength, and flexibility. It’s suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels – and is even recognised as a beneficial exercise by the NHS. Pilates provides the perfect balance between strength and flexibility. It can help to reshape your body, making it leaner, and improve your posture. It also helps relieve unwanted stress and tensions, with its slow, controlled approach giving long-term results.
Pilates takes its name from the German physical trainer, Joseph Pilates, who developed it in the early 20th century and called it ‘Contrology’ 1.

Pilates uses about 50 repetitive exercises to work your muscles. Each one consists of ‘five essentials’ – breathing, pelvic placement, rib cage placement, shoulder blade movement and stabilisation, and head and cervical placement.
We have two Pilates sessions each week – one between 12pm and 1pm every Wednesday and the second every Sunday from 10.40am until 11.40am. Both classes are extremely popular and soon get booked up, so secure your place early via the Bolton Arena Sports Village app or you can check out our class timetable and book your Pilates class.

Both yoga and Pilates offer great workouts, and the best choice depends on your goals:
Similarities: Both can be done with minimal equipment, focus on breath control, improve mental focus, reduce stress, and can be adapted for different fitness levels.
Yoga emphasises flexibility, mobility, and mindfulness, with various styles ranging from gentle to advanced. Some poses may be challenging for those with joint issues.
Pilates is low-impact, great for core strength and injury recovery, and can be done on a mat or with equipment for added resistance.3
