Memorial 24 hour football match takes place at Bolton Arena

Last Saturday Bolton Arena hosted a 24 hour 5-A-Side memorial match in the memory of Jonny Sharples who tragically passed away aged 17 some 15 yrs ago. Jonny was a player in the Bolton Arena Friday night youth league at the time, 4-5 of his team mates still play together in the adult leagues.

Jonny’s friends stage a memorial event each year, every five years the group attempt an extraordinary sporting feat. The 10th anniversary saw the group cycle from Bolton to West Ham’s ground, the team whom Jonny supported.

This year is the 15th anniversary year and the group decided to stage a 24 hour football match, it took place on a 5-A-Side pitch at the arena last weekend. There were over 120 players that took part in the event including Bolton Wanderers legends Stelios, Nicky Hunt and Abdoulaye Faye.

The players were supported by an array of friends, family and teams dropping by to play their part in the achievement. Bolton Arena staff were actively involved throughout the event that meant so much for Jonny's family and friends.

The final score counter for their the head-to-head match which ended after 24 hrs at 331 goals to 300.

Event organiser Jay Murray said ‘ We just wanted to say a massive final thank you to Marcus Brown and Simon Sharrock at Bolton Arena from all of us, for letting us have the pitch over the weekend. There’s nowhere else we could have done this, and realise it was a huge effort from everyone. We've raised over £8.5k for the charities which were 'Wish upon a Star' and 'Salvation Army'  which will be amazing for the kids it will help, and wouldn’t be possible without you both’.

We would like to thank event sponsors Regency Estates based in Horwich for their fantastic support.
