Elite Athlete Policy

We recognise the importance of supporting local talented athletes enabling them to pursue sporting excellence.  Our Elite Athletes can use our facilities and expertise to reach their sporting goals.

Athletes will, subject to a successful application, be included in the “Elite Athlete” Scheme and will be permitted to complimentary use of Bolton Arena’s facilities to enhance their training programme.

Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby Player

Ayaz Bhuta is a British Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby Player who currently plays for the Great Britain National Wheelchair Rugby Team.

Ayaz first played wheelchair basketball, but has been playing wheelchair rugby since 2009.

After making his Paralympic debut representing Great Britain at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, finishing fifth. 

Ayaz has seen success, winning the European Wheelchair Championships in 2015 and 20717. Most recently, Ayaz was part of the GB team that won gold in Wheelchair Rugby at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.

Invictus Games Athlete

After 6 years in the British Army, Tom O'Brien signed up to ‘Sports Recovery’ as a coach for Shotput, Discus, Power lifting and Archery. Tom then joined Preston Harriers to continue his interest in these events.

Tom then looked to participate in these events for himself. A shoulder injury meant he had to prioritise discus as opposed to shot, as well as powerlifting, and he hasn’t looked back since.

Tom was the best British thrower at the 2018 Warrior Games, also winning bronze in the powerlifting category.

Now, Tom is looking forward to the Invictus Games, in the spring of 2022, which is finally happening after being postponed for 2 years due to COVID-19.

Jack Cullen is a British professional boxer. As an amateur, he competed in the men's middleweight event at the English National Championships in 2014.

Jack is currently the IBF International super-middleweight champion. A title which he has held since July 2021.

Jack's current professional record is 24-20-3.

Elias Kachunga

Bolton Wanderers Footballer

Elias Kachunga is a professional footballer who plays for Bolton Wanderers.

Elias spent the early part of his career in Germany, coming through the ranks at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

In 2016, Elias moved to England to complete a loan spell with Huddersfield Town. He won promotion and played in the Premier League for 2 years, before moving to Sheffield Wednesday, and then onto Bolton Wanderers.
