Over the coming months, we’ll be getting to know more about our resident football teams, finding out why they play football at Bolton Arena and what it has led them to achieve.
First up, we spoke to Rob Ryan FC, a 5-A-Side team who ply their trade in our Monday Night Premier League.
The initial team was formed in an 11-A-Side League, before the team then transitioned into 5-A-Side Leagues. After initially playing in Chorley, they opted for change and have been playing at Bolton Arena for 2 seasons now.
The Premier League side, managed by Jonny Oates, stated game length, facilities, knowledge from events hosted by Bolton Arena and already knowing existing players for reasons as to why they chose to come to Bolton Arena.
In terms of their approach to each game, Rob Ryan FC opt for the same tactics, sticking to their philosophies. However, if needed, they are capable of adapting their tactics at half-time depending on how the match is going.
The above tactics stood them in good stead last season as they won promotion to the Premier League from the Championship as winners, with former Arena Leagues Player of the Month, George Hough, spearheading the title win as the side’s talisman, as well as being industrious enough to display his versatility in midfield.
Unsurprisingly, the side mentioned that last season’s Championship title win was the highlight of their time playing at Bolton Arena, as not only did they win promotion to the Premier League, they also won a prize from our League sponsors.
When asked what tips they would give to teams who were potentially looking at joining our 5-A-Side Leagues, they recommended to make sure you have eight people interested, so you have a solid core of players in case people have to drop out. They also recommended to make sure that you are fit before joining as the intensity of matches can be very high!
Thanks for speaking to us, lads, and good luck for the rest of the season!

Clearly the marketing had worked because there was a steady flow of attendees throughout the full day an I felt the concept of keynote sessions was well thought through and implemented. It’s three years now since we formed our walking football programme which today boasts four weekly sessions and a registration of sixty eight players. We accommodate all football needs whether it be social sessions, friendlies, tournaments and league options.
Last August we formed our very first league team to enter the Curzon Ashton six-a-side league which spanned over seven months and twenty four matches. Previously, our pool of players have entered numerous tournaments picking up success at the Chorley Cup ‘winners’, Lancashire Cup winners along with some of our players now representing BWFC and the Northwest County teams at O50’s and O60’s.
It gives us great pleasure to share with you more walking football success as the Bolton Arena team went on to claim the Curzon Ashton league title on the very last day, last game and final two minutes of the season.
A 2-1 victory over arch rivals Nash Amblers in a title shootout game saw the team lift the trophy and claim yet more thorough deserved honours.
