Celebrating 20 years with Nicola Seymour
In the latest instalment of our 20 year interviews, we speak to our Studio Co-Ordinator, Nicola Seymour, a member of staff who has been with us since the building first opened in 2001.
Can you tell us more about your role and background?
In my current role, I am responsible for setting up our studio timetable, recruiting instructors and liaising with members, the gym team and management, as well as regularly updating the studio timetable, by bringing the latest fitness trends to Bolton Arena. This is done by interacting with fitness partners locally and nationally, including our virtual class partner, Les Mills.
My career in Fitness Teaching started when I passed my Fitness Teaching qualifications whilst studying at Leeds University, where I started to teach classes at the campus leisure centre. I furthered my experience in the industry by working as a leisure assistant, in addition to studying for more fitness qualifications, before making the move to teach fitness classes as a freelance instructor at different facilities in the Greater Manchester area. I then worked at a variety of health clubs in a range of roles including duty manager, assistant manager and studio manager, before joining Bolton Arena, just before I turned 29.
What made you apply for a job at Bolton Arena?
I applied for a job at Bolton Arena after some of my colleagues at my former job had been offered roles ahead of the opening of the Arena in July 2001.
Do you remember your first day?
I don't specifically remember my first day. The first few weeks and months were a bit of a blur, whilst working with a lot of new people and recruiting a lot of new members, although a lot of familiar faces followed myself and other instructors from our former roles. My first main responsibility was to finalise the fitness studio timetable that had a lot of different options in terms of type of class and timings for all of our members at this newly opened facility.
What do you think is your biggest achievement since you have been here?
I would say my biggest achievement is overseeing the continuous progression and improvement of the timetable offered to members. This is alongside the continued recruitment of professional, motivational and fantastic instructors who have displayed loyalty to Bolton Arena and delivered fitness classes at a consistently high standard.
What has been your favourite memory from the past 20 years?
I have a lot of favourite memories from the past 20 years, with some of the most memorable ones being on the Arena Christmas parties. A standout memory of the festive celebrations that comes to mind, gives an honourable shoutout to Sue Hayes and Stephanie Whittingham!
Thank you for sharing your story with us, Nicola. It's been a pleasure to have you as a member of staff for the past 20 years.
