Celebrating 20 years with Lesley Hough

Our 20 Year interviews continue with Customer Service Manager, Lesley Hough.

Can you tell us more about your role and background?

I used to be a lifeguard for Bolton Metro before joining Bolton Arena and my role here is Customer Service Manager. Really, I’m a jack of all trades, you have to be. My role involves ensuring that the building opens and closes on time, to ensure that everything is set and runs smoothly for the day, solving potential problems and dealing with issues as they arise. If I cannot sort them, I ensure that they are dealt with by the right person or department.

What made you apply for a job at Bolton Arena?

I had been at Bolton Metro for a number of years, where I had done quite a lot of step up roles within the leisure centres of Bolton and I felt that it was time to broaden my wings a bit and take on more responsibilities. I figured where better than a new centre.

Do you remember your first day?

Yes, I do remember my first day, quite daunting as I didn’t really know who else was going to be there. I remember relaxing a bit when I saw some familiar faces in Kerry MacDonald and Simon Sharrock. I remember looking around the room and wondering what everyone’s role in the building would be and thinking would they realise that I was as nervous as they probably were.

What do you think is your biggest achievement since you have been here?

Well it could only be one thing really, couldn’t it? Winning the Hand on Heart Lifesaver of the year award alongside Garry & Tracey for our part in the resuscitation of Derek Smith when he collapsed after watching Bolton Wanderers game on 4th May 2013, the force was certainly with us that day (Star Wars day). Derek turned 88 last November, in the last few years he has given his granddaughter away at her wedding and welcomed a great grandson. I’m proud to say that I played a part in making that happen. I will also mention winning the employee of the year a few years ago, nice to know that I was recognised by my colleagues.

What has been your favourite memory from the past 20 years?

So many memories to choose from. Working behind the scenes at 2002 Commonwealth Games, conquering the 3 peaks (in 3 months) with the Arena-led walks, helping the health walks ladies complete the 5km walk, to name some, you can’t ask me to choose a favourite from 20 years of memories.

It's been a fantastic 20 years, Lesley. Thank you for speaking with us.
