Former Champions Among World Class Entry For Sixth Bolton Indoor wheelchair Tennis Tournament
Five former champions, including leading Brit Jordanne Whiley and world No. 3 Aniek van Koot of the Netherlands are among more than 80 players from 22 countries in a star-studded field for the LTA’s 2019 Bolton Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, which takes place this week at USN Bolton Arena from Tuesday 29th to Saturday 23rd February.
Ten-time Grand Slam champion Whiley, the winner of the women’s singles in Bolton in 2015 and 2016, is attempting to make it back-to-back titles on home soil this week after being victorious over the weekend at the ITF 3 Series Wrexham Indoor.
The Wrexham event was Whiley’s first international tournament since winning a fourth Wimbledon doubles title in July 2017 and subsequently becoming a mum for the first time in January 2018.
Whiley said: “For my first international tournament since 2017 I certainly exceeded my expectations last week. Now I’m really excited for Bolton as there are more Top 10 players than last week and it’s a whole new challenge.
“Compared to training I made some big improvements in certain aspects of my game last week, but I’ve also played better in training than some of the tennis I played in Wrexham and there’s still plenty to work on so it’s going to be an interesting week.”
With Whiley set to regain a place on the International Tennis Federation’s world rankings next week, since she needs to have earned ranking points from a minimum of two tournaments, the former world No.3 will meet current world No.3 and 2014 and 2018 Bolton Indoor champion van Koot in Wednesday’s women’s singles second round this week.
Whiley beat Germany’s world No.9 Katharina Kruger in Sunday’s final in Wrexham. Kruger and van Koot are just two of four Top 10 players among the women’s singles entry in Bolton, which also includes current world No.8 Marjolein Buis, the 2017 Bolton Indoor champion and runner-up in last year’s all-Dutch final.
European players fill the bulk of the eight seeded positions for the men’s singles, which features seven of the world’s Top 20 and another strong Dutch entry headed by world No.10 Maikel Scheffers and world No.11 Tom Egberink.
Domestic interest in the men’s singles is led by British No.3 Dermot Bailey, a semi-finalist in singles and finalist in doubles in Wrexham last week. Bailey plays second seed Egberink for a place in the men’s quarter-finals.
Two former champions are among the entries for the quad singles, including another Dutch world No.10-ranked player, Sam Schroder. Schroder won the Bolton Indoor title in 2017 and lines up alongside Sweden’s 2015 champion Anders hard and leading Brits James Shaw, Antony Cotterill and Richard Green.
In addition to the world-class play, this year’s event sees the return of Bolton’s Junior Wheelchair Tournament taking place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th February, with entries including six members of the GB Wheelchair Junior Futures Potential Programme.
Tournament Director Claire McCulloch commented: “This is the start of a vitally important season for international wheelchair tennis as players begin to think about qualification for the Tokyo Paralympics and that is reflected in the world class entry we have in Bolton. We are very excited to build on the success of last year’s inaugural Bolton Junior Wheelchair Tennis Tournament with many of the country’s top younger players joining us at the weekend. To have our world-class athletes play alongside stars of the future really helps to inspire upcoming talent and we would encourage all members of the public to come down to the arena and watch some world-class sport for free this week!”
The Bolton Indoor ITF 2 forms part of the International Tennis Federation’s UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour and is the second of seven world ranking wheelchair tennis tournaments to be held in Great Britain in 2019.
Entry for spectators is free throughout the duration of the tournament.

USN Bolton Arena in partnership with Horwich Harriers are delighted to introduce a new runners group every Monday, sessions are perfect for adults either just starting out or getting back into running.
The FREE 12 week programme begins on Mon 28th January, 6pm at Bolton Arena. Running sessions will be delivered by fully qualified coaches.
Setting off from the Arena main reception you will head out in to the local area as a group building your fitness and confidence each week. Group runners will work towards achieving the 5KM distance.

Precision fitness: how unlocking your DNA can change the way to train and your diet
We’ve all been embarrassed by a relative as they’ve told us that we look “just like your father when he was your age” or that we’ve “got your mothers eyes”. Statements like these are hardly surprising when you understand how DNA works. DNA is the molecule of hereditary – it is the biological information that we inherit from our parents that influences how we look, grow and develop.
Since the 13-year long project of mapping the human genome was completed in 2003, our understanding how can harness our DNA’s influence has grown exponentially. DNA analysis can be used to solve crimes, reconnect long lost relatives, or identify an individual’s risk of certain health issues. And now the same technology can be used to utilise exercise and nutrition.
Relating DNA and fitness
The primary function of DNA is to regulate for the production of proteins. You don’t just consume proteins through your diet, your body also creates them as they are required for a number of biological processes. Genes are specific regions of the DNA that hold the instructions for creating these proteins.
Whilst we all have the same number of genes, approximately 24,000, there are different versions of these genes that behave quite differently regards to their individual protein production. Through DNA analysis, you can get an insight into your own personal protein profile to understand what workout, nutrition and lifestyle strategies you should follow to maximise the effects of these proteins.
Traits influenced by DNA
There are a number of exercise, nutrition and lifestyle traits that can provide insight into how to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of your workouts and diet:
Muscle fibre profile
Are you a speed or endurance athletes, and how should your workouts reflect this?
Do you respond best to high volume, low intensity workouts or low-volume, high intensity workouts?
How quickly should you perform each rep to elicit the desired and metabolic damage and growth?
How many grams of fibre do you need to consume per day to maintain a proper digestive health and insulin function?
Do you have an increased sensitivity to saturated fat and need to limit your intake?
When should you consume proteins throughout the day to help control appetite and avoid overeating?
How does your circadian rhythm affect the quality of your sleep?
Are you a fast or slow metaboliser of caffeine?

Is your sweet tooth a genetic trait that you’ve inherited?

Virtual Classes …. one month on…
Bolton Arena, recently launched Les Mills Virtual classes to offer an alternative to the very popular instructor led classes.
Virtual classes offer flexibility for our members, whilst also widening the studio class options available. It allows members to attend a class almost whenever it suits them.
The class timetable doubled with the introduction of virtual Body Combat, Body Pump, Body Balance, CX Worx, SH’Bam and RPM.
Since the introduction in October Virtual Classes have been attended over 500 times.
The most popular programmes have been RPM & CX Worx both recording 150 attendances followed by Body Pump with 105 visits in the first four weeks.
Studio Coordinator Nic Seymour, commented on the success of The Les Mills Virtual system “Virtual has been widely accepted by the majority of class users, proving to be extremely successful through its launch in mid – October which is a recognised quiet time in the fitness calendar.
It has enabled us to introduce new programmes, maximise off peak studio usage and offer choice to new and existing members, vital for those people who struggle to fit exercise around their working day. It’s a very welcome addition to the Instructor led timetable”.

In today’s ‘on the go’ economy, it’s down to us to provide customers with a choice of what they want and when they want it. Virtual helps to create this by increasing flexibility for our members, whilst also widening the options available. It allows members to do a workout almost whenever it suits them.
We’ll be doubling our class timetable with the introduction of virtual BodyCombat, BodyPump, BodyBalance, CXWorx, SH’Bam and RPM. Not only are we offering a number of extra classes, we’re implementing new classes to keep up with the rapidly changing health & fitness industry.
New classes are added every 3 months, ensuring they are fresh and the music is current. There is always a diverse range of categories with more programs being added to the catalogue over time.
Will the Les Mills virtual replace live instructors?
No way. Nothing beats the energy of a live Les Mills workout experience and nothing ever will. A live workout is where Instructors and exercisers can experience a very real connection, building relationships that lead to exercise adherence for participants and membership retention for clubs. Live workouts will always be the premium experience with the latest music and choreography. Virtual workouts are a great complement to live workouts, but they are never going to replace the life-changing fitness experiences that a real Instructor can.

Arena Run Together starts Wednesday 18th July, 12pm – 1pm on the running track.
Whether you’re a complete beginner, an occasional jogger, or an experienced runner looking to challenge yourself, Arena Run Together has something for everyone.
This new activity takes place on Wednesday lunch times, the session will last between 30 and 45 minutes offering lunch time trainers time to get back to work.
You’ll find a friendly, supportive environment where you can have fun and work towards your own personal goals with other people at a similar stage on their running journey.
There is no pressure to compete or run a specific pace, distance, or time, it really is about lacing up your trainers and taking part.
Sessions are free to USN Bolton Arena Gym members and a priced £2.50 per session for non-members.
