What are the benefits of running?
1. Running Improves Your Health
Believe it or not, running is actually a great way to increase your overall level of health. Research shows that running can raise your levels of good cholesterol while also helping you increase lung function and use. In addition, running can also boost your immune system.
2. Weight Loss
Running is one of the best forms of exercise for losing or maintaining a consistent weight. You will find that it is a leading way to burn off extra calories and that it is the second most effective exercise in terms of calories burned per minute, following only after cross country skiing.
3. It Prevents Disease
Running can help reduce the risk of having a stroke. It is also proven to help reduce the risk of having a heart attack. By helping the arteries retain their elasticity and strengthening the heart, your chances of suffering a heart attack can be significantly reduced.
4. Running Boosts Your Confidence
Not all of the benefits of running are physical. Running can provide an noticeable boost to your confidence and self-esteem. By setting and achieving goals, you can help give yourself a greater sense of empowerment that will leave you feeling much happier.
5. It Relieves Stress
Stress can actually cause a number of health and mood problems. It can also diminish appetite and sleep quality. When you run, you force your body to exert excess energy and hormones. Running also helps to reduce your chances of developing tension headaches.
6. Running has the Power to Eliminate Depression
When you are depressed, the last thing you likely want to do is to get up and go for a run. Yet you will find that after only a few minutes of running, your brain will start to secrete hormones that naturally improve your mood. In fact, there are few things in the world that can better or more rapidly treat depression than exercise such as running. It is also a fantastic sociable activity.
Running is incredibly beneficial to the body, mind and spirit. You will find that even short runs can leave you feeling more energized, more focused and better able to enjoy all that life has to offer.

In our first ‘Be Inspired’ feature of 2020, we speak to Phil Lyon, a fairly new member to the gym, but a member who has achieved a lot in in less than a year.
Phil had been looking to join a gym since 2015. However, much of his time was spent looking after his sick wife, limiting his exercise time, which led to an increase in weight. Tragically, his wife died in early 2019.
Phil’s decision to change his lifestyle came midway through 2019 when he got tickets to an event and upon walking up steps to the event, realised he was more out of breath than he should have been. This led to a change of diet in May and joining Bolton Arena Gym in June, after a recommendation from a close friend.
Through joining our gym, having one-to-one sessions with our instructors and changing his diet, Phil said that the gym has helped him “tremendously”, going on to say that he feels mentally fitter as well as physically fitter, with the increase in exercise helping reduce a pain in one of his knees.
Phil described his gym journey as a “life changer”, as this has helped him to lead a more active lifestyle. One aspect of his outside life that it has changed is that he now walks to more places instead of driving and feels the benefits of doing so.
We asked Phil if he had any advice to people who may be apprehensive about joining a gym. Phil admitted to being apprehensive himself about joining as he had never been in a gym before. However, the friendly staff, who are always on hand to give advice as well as the fellow gym members really helped him settle in.
Thank you for sharing your story with us, Phil. We look forward to you continuing your journey with us.
Keep a look out for our next Be Inspired feature.

In our latest edition of ‘Be Inspired’, we talked to Gareth Mann, a member of Bolton Arena Gym since 2013.
Gareth talked us through a range of topics from his weight loss journey to his achievements as a result of his increased level of fitness after training at Bolton Arena Gym.
Over the past 4 and a half years, Gareth has lost over 5 stone and credited our fitness instructors for helping him achieve this. A change of diet and training guidance from our instructors are the 2 major factors in Gareth’s weight loss.
As Gareth has been a member of other gyms, we asked him what makes Bolton Arena Gym stand out. The vast range of equipment and the fact you don’t have to wait to get on anything, with particular reference to our free weights area were the standout points from his response.
When asked what advice he would give to other people who were looking to lose weight, Gareth said to “stick with it and don’t give up. The best results always take time to achieve”.
After starting his weight loss journey with us, this has led Gareth to go on to make several achievements outside of the gym. He runs the Greater Manchester 10k every year whilst also raising money for charities such as Christie’s and Parkinson’s in the form of other 10ks. Next year Gareth is raising his bar even higher as he is currently training for the 2020 Manchester Marathon.
Gareth’s weight loss has also benefitted his personal life, he has become more confident, which has enabled him to focus more. Stress reduction and an increase in a balance in his life were also benefits that he has reaped since training at Bolton Arena Gym.
Thank you for sharing your story with us, Gareth, and best of luck next year for the marathon.

In this month’s edition of Be Inspired, we speak to Craig Smart, a long-term member of Bolton Arena Gym.
Craig first joined Bolton Arena Gym in 2011, two years after having his second open heart surgery due to a condition he has had from birth named Tetralogy of Fallot, a combination of four congenital heart abnormalities.
Aiming to get fit and improve his strength and flexibility, Craig chose to come to Bolton Arena Gym as it is local to his workplace. In 2018, after a brief time away trying out other gyms, Craig returned to the Arena, citing the friendly staff as one of his reasons for doing so. He is now settled into a routine on coming in early around 6:30am and seeing familiar faces each day.
Craig went on to say that “the gym is also a great motivational and release tool. It allows me to have time to myself, to manage my thoughts and gives me something to look forward to. I can take myself away from the stresses of daily life and focus on my fitness.
A recommendation from Craig was to get information from our instructors if you are ever unsure of anything. Craig seeked assurance from our instructors in regards to how hard he should be pushing himself after having a heart operation.
Training at Bolton Arena Gym has helped Craig’s mental toughness, which has led him onto several achievements including dropping his weight from 80kg to 65kg and also participating and succeeding in events such as the Wigan 10k and Manchester Marathon Relay.
In terms of inspiration, Craig is a new father and uses his daughter as inspiration to stay active and healthy as he wants to set a good example to his family, whilst also being able to participate in sport-based activities with her. Another form of inspiration comes from Craig’s wife, former Olympic GB Swimmer, Helen Don-Duncan, who competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympics in backstroke and with her vigorous training schedule e.g. waking up in the early hours of the morning to train, this inspired Craig to follow her lead and do the same. Craig now supports others and introduced a weight loss challenge to his work colleagues. Approximately 20 staff members took part in the challenge and they collectively lost over 150Ibs over an 8 week period.
Thank you for sharing your story and recovery journey, with us Craig.
Our new fitness timetable starts Monday 7th October!
We again have a fantastic mix of instructor led and virtual classes that make up a fitness timetable with over 100 classes running per week.
We’re delighted to welcome some new instructors to Stateside Foods Bolton Arena. Rick is returning to teach Body Pump and Body Attack on Friday evening, a perfect way to ‘start your weekend the right way with a blast of fun and energy.’
After rave reviews from our members, Bartosz will be teaching Zumba on Saturday morning on a permanent basis. So if you’re looking for a fun, party style, interval class then this is certainly for you, providing a smashing start to a Saturday.
Why not combine sport with staying fit? Cardio Tennis is again on the timetable, however it’ll now run at a slightly later time on Tuesday evening. Cardio Tennis is a fun, energetic class, played to up-tempo music. Don’t worry if you’ve never played before, Cardio Tennis is great for beginners.
We have a ‘club night’ theme running throughout the timetable on Thursday evening. This starts with Trim & Tone taught by Lisa A at 17:15 and finishes with Clubbercise taught by Nikita at 20:15. Thursday is the new Friday, so get yourself ready for a great weekend with our club night.
Several amendments have been made to the timetable with regards to class timings, which should benefit all our members and customers.
For more information or to take a look at videos of our virtual and instructor led classes click here.
New timetables are now available to pick up from Reception. To book head over to our website or call reception on 01204 488100.
Over the coming months we’ll be learning more about some of our gym members. We’ll be discussing training patterns, looking at current regimes, finding out about their why and highlighting any special achievements.
First up is long standing member, Andrea Lewis-Coker.
Andrea, has been a member at Bolton arena for nearly 9 years. She trains almost every day, using the gym, instructor led and virtual classes, whilst also having 1 to 1 sessions with our gym instructors.
Andrea’s main intention when first joining the gym was to keep fit and get some down time for herself after work. However, over the last 12 months she has seen a real change in weight loss and her overall fitness has improved.
We asked Andrea what advice would she given to any of our members ” I’d advise members to complete a programme with one of the instructors. This helps you learn about your strengths & weaknesses, develop your individual goals and keep you focused. The 1:1 sessions with the instructors are also extremely beneficial, as they push you further than you would whilst training on your own. The flexibility and wide range of classes are also a fantastic plus point. With so many classes per week, it’s so easy to fit in a class, if you fancy something different to the gym.”
We recently introduced a number of challenges into the gym. Andrea excelled at one in particular, our rowing challenge last year. Not only did she win, Andrea discovered a new love. Winning our challenge, inspired her to compete further, joining an online team and coming second in her category over 2000m at the English Indoor Rowing Championships at the Manchester Velodrome in February. That’s not all Andrea has won, she has also won a number of USN products provided by us, for winning our Member Of The Month!
Thank you, Andrea for sharing your story and for being a fantastic gym member.
