Bolton Arena Outdoor Fitness Classes start Monday!

We’re excited to announce that from Monday 13th July, we’ll be offering up to 6 of your favourite fitness classes, per day, outdoors!

Whilst it’s been great to see so many of you adapting your sessions, using virtual workouts and taking part in many of our homeworkouts. Bolton Arena Gym instructors are very much looking forward to delivering live classes for our valued and loyal members through the use of our exceptional outdoor space.

The upcoming weather forecast looks extremely favourable and we’re looking to take full advantage.

Bolton Arena remains fully committed to its health & safety responsibilities. Mental and physical activity and fitness has been proven to be key in improving the immune system and protecting people from this virus and illness generally. Class capacity has been reduced to allow for social distancing measures to be in place. There’ll also be a period of time between each class to allow for all the equipment used to be cleaned thoroughly.

Customer Update: 13th May 2020

Following announcements and guidance provided by the government this week, please see an update below:

We would like to express our thanks to all our customers for their loyalty and support during this time. We have received many messages from customers looking forward to coming back once Bolton Arena re-opens, we appreciate your support.

We hope to see you all soon. It’s been refreshing to see so many members posting examples of how they’re staying healthy and active on social media channels. We hope you’ve taken advantage of the home workouts and challenges we’ve provided in the last two months from our various departments.

Following the Government’s Covid-19 recovery strategy released yesterday. It confirms opening dates for: “leisure facilities” in Step 3. “…may only be fully possible significantly later… earlier than 4 July”.

Therefore Bolton Arena will remain closed for the foreseeable future, whilst we are working behind the scenes to prepare for re-opening, ensuring we are able to accommodate our customers in a safe environment.

Gym & Tennis Membership Information

In line with national guidance advising the UK public to avoid unnecessary social contact, we have taken the decision to close Bolton Arena to the public from 10.30pm on Friday March 20th.

We understand that this decision will come as a disappointment to many but ultimately, the health and wellbeing of our customers, staff and the community we serve is our highest priority.

Given the day-by-day evolution of the pandemic and its impact on society as a whole, we are unable to give any indication of the closure period though we will provide updates as and when we have them. During this time we will continue to follow the advice provided by Government, Public Health England and the NHS.

All gym and tennis memberships will be frozen from 1st April until we re-open to the public. All direct debit collections will be stopped and all ‘Paid In Full memberships’ will have time added on at the end of their membership.

We’ll be offering support to members through home workouts. Below are two links from Les Mills, which have a number of home workout content available. Plus our instructors will providing daily workout videos via or social media channels.

Once it is safe to re-open our doors (subject to guidance) we look forward to welcoming you back to enjoy our services and activities. We know how valued Bolton Arena’s facilities are to our local community and will be more important than ever once the current pandemic is over. Gymnastics – Cancellation Of Classes

We have been monitoring the Coronavirus situation on a daily basis through government information and advice from Public Health England. The latest government update issued yesterday, is that the schools will be closing on Friday.

Over the week, we have put a number in measure in place to help stop the spread of the virus.

We have remained positive and tried to keep your children’s daily routines as normal as possible throughout this time.

However, in light of government, Public Health England and British Gymnastics advice, we have made the very difficult decision to cease all gymnastics classes indefinitely, from Friday 20th March at 20.30.

All remaining sessions will be credited to your child’s account and there will be no request for payments for the new block, until we have a date for re-opening.

We apologise for the inconvenience this will undoubtedly cause. However, the health & safety of our customers is our top priority.

Further updates will be provided by due course via email and through our social media channels.

We fully appreciate the support given throughout the week.

Bolton’s Newest Community Run Group Off To A Running Start

The Bolton Arena Community Run Group, which launched in January to get more people out running together, is off to a great start.

The group, led by Horwich RMI Harriers Coach in Running Fitness, Michelle Mortimer, meets every Wednesday at 6pm and Friday at midday, at Bolton Arena. It is free to attend, and is for all abilities.

Community Run Group was set up as a project between Bolton Arena, and long established athletics club Horwich RMI Harriers, to encourage newer runners to be part of a group and to have fun exercising together. Since it launched in January, the group already has around 20 regular members, who are enjoying the social aspect of running with others, and the variety of sessions, which include steady runs around Horwich and Lostock, hill sessions and interval training.

Community Run Group leader, Michelle, said: “We wanted to attract those people who don’t necessarily have the desire or the confidence to join a running club, and give them the opportunity to run with others. Many of the people who have been attending the group so far have been returning from injury, or are relatively new to running, and they’re all realising that running as part of a group enables them to enjoy running more, and achieve more than they thought they were capable of.

“It’s fantastic that we already have so many regular faces attending, who really make an effort to make newer members feel welcome. We have been doing a mixture of social runs – around 3-4 miles – and on some sessions we do a shorter run around Middlebrook and incorporate some hill reps or some faster running to help people improve their fitness, as well as have fun. We keep the sessions as varied as possible, and never do the same thing two weeks running.”

Carol, who has been attending since the very first session, said: “Having lost my fitness and confidence following injury, I’m really enjoying running again. Everyone is so friendly and supportive.”

Fiona used to find running boring, until she started attending the group sessions. She said: I’ve tried running before and never enjoyed it. My thoughts towards it now have definitely changed.”

Fran has been attending the Friday daytime sessions on a regular basis. She said: “Working shifts, it’s hard to find groups to go running with regularly, especially during the daytimeHaving the Friday lunchtime group has definitely given me more of an incentive to come out for a daytime run – rain or shine! The sessions are always varied and by the end of it, and with Michelle’s encouragement, you realise that you’ve gone further and/or faster than you thought you could.”

Alicia agrees: “I can already see the improvements in my running.”

Myles is new to running, and when he found out about the group through an Instagram contact, he got in touch with Michelle before attending. He said: “I was very unsure about going to the first meet up. Why was I worried? From the moment I arrived to the moment I left, I was made to feel like one of a small family. Michelle and the others always look after each other, adding to the fun and friendship found in this group.

“I cannot believe that over a short period of time, Michelle has managed to help me complete my fasted 5k. With her support, enthusiasm and her knowledge of how to train efficiently, I am improving day by day. Michelle and the rest of the group are not only running buddies, but now friends.”

Nicola also felt a little nervous about attending her first session: ““I felt really apprehensive when I first came,” she said, “but everyone is so friendly. I really look forward to Wednesday evenings. All different abilities, no pressure and really enjoyable, varied sessions.”

Dan, also a Coach at Horwich RMI Harriers, attends the group as part of his own training, and said: “I love how this group has developed over a short period of time. There is a really good feel that genuinely all abilities are catered for. A mixture of sessions makes it interesting, and why folks come back.”

Walk Group – Upcoming Walk Friday 20th March

After completing walks around Entwistle Reservoir and Borsdane Wood, Aspull. The next walk planned for our very popular walk group will take place on Friday 20th March.

The walk group has been setup in partnership with Bolton Ramblers who have been organising and leading country walks successfully for over 50 years.

Walks will take place Bi-Monthly on Friday mornings beginning at 11am. Bolton Ramblers will be accompanied by a member of the gym team to lead the group on a walk between 8 and 10 miles.

Job Description

We require an academy coach to join our development and outreach coaching team. The successful applicant will be responsible for the delivery of weekly coaching sessions in the evenings and weekends to players on our junior and adult development courses. The coach will be responsible for ensuring an excellent standard of delivery to ensure a high level of retention of players attending the programme.

Overview of the Venue

Bolton Arena is a Regional and Local Player Development Centre located in the North West with approximately 350 players attending our weekly junior and adult development courses. We also have a large performance programme which caters for performance players across the region. We are a 7-court indoor facility with an additional 2 outdoor courts and 4 badminton courts.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate must be a reliable, passionate individual with great communication skills. Previous experience of working with large groups within mini tennis and a background of coaching adults is also desirable.

Star-Studded Entry For Bolton Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament

Grand Slam champions Jordanne Whiley, Gordon Reid and Andy Lapthorne head star-studded entry for Bolton Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament.

Great Britain’s recent Australian Open champions and Paralympic medallists Jordanne Whiley, Gordon Reid and Andy Lapthorne will each bid to complete a hat-trick of singles titles when the Bolton Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament returns to the Bolton Arena from Tuesday 18th to Saturday 22nd February.

As the LTA brings world class wheelchair tennis to Bolton for the seventh successive year, Whiley, Reid and Lapthorne are among six former Bolton Indoor champions on the men’s, women’s and quad singles entry lists for this year’s ITF 2 event, which features 83 players from 22 countries.

The trio are also among a host of leading Brits and Tokyo 2020 Paralympic hopefuls all looking to gain valuable world rankings points, with the wheelchair tennis qualification window for the Tokyo Paralympic Games continuing though to early June.

Bolton Indoor women’s singles champion in both 2015 and 2016, Whiley was runner-up last year, just a week after making her return to international wheelchair tennis following the birth of son Jackson in January 2018. World No.5 Whiley, who won her 10th Grand Slam doubles title at the Australian Open after reaching singles finals at her first two tournaments of the year, said:

“It’s amazing to think it’s only 12 months since I returned from maternity leave and I’m already a Grand Slam champion again. Beating the top seed last year in Bolton, in just my second tournament back, gave me a major boost for the rest of 2019 and is one of many great memories I’ve got from Bolton. But I’d really love to go one better than last year and gain my third title and feel I’m in the form to do so.”

Whiley is joined on the women’s singles entry list by fellow Brits and former Bolton Indoor finalists Lucy Shuker and Louise Hunt, while other leading contenders include Australian Open semi-finalist Zhenzhen Zhu, the USA’s Dana Mathewson and Russia’s Viktoriia Lvova.

While Whiley is the only former champion on the women’s singles entry lists, Rio 2016 Paralympic men’s singles champion Reid will be looking to add to his titles at the first two editions of Bolton Indoor in 2014 and 2015.

World No.6 Reid, singles finalist and doubles champion at the recent Australia Open, is likely to encounter his strongest opposition from 2016 and 2017 Bolton Indoor winner and fellow former Wimbledon champion Stefan Olsson of Sweden as well as reigning Bolton Indoor champion Maikel Scheffers of the Netherlands.

Two former two-time Bolton Indoor champions also feature on the quad singles entry list, with Lapthorne and Dutchman Sam Schroder having shared the title between them in each of the last four years.

Schroder is the reigning champion in Bolton, but reigning US Open champion and world No.2 Lapthorne holds strong claims. Quad singles finalist and doubles champion at the Australian Open, Lapthorne will attempt to add to his 2016 and 2018 titles that he won in Bolton.

Alongside one of the strongest fields ever assembled for the senior events at the Bolton Indoor, many of the country’s leading younger players will also be in action on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd February, as the Bolton Indoor Junior Wheelchair Tennis Tournament showcases potential stars of the future. Great Britain’s World Team Cup medallists Ben Bartram, Dahnon Ward and Ruby Bishop join players from France, Israel and the Netherlands on the entry list.

Tournament Director Kirsty Thomson commented:

“Over the past six years the Bolton Indoor has grown in stature and reputation and has become the focal point for many of the world’s top players at this time of the year. With the quest for world ranking points at a premium now as players continue in their efforts to qualify for Tokyo 2020, we are delighted to welcome such a star-studded field, with plenty of Brits for local fans to come out and cheer for.

“For anyone who has yet to watch wheelchair tennis in person, I would encourage them to come and enjoy for free what is guaranteed to be a fascinating week of world class sport, with the opportunity to see potential stars of the Tokyo Paralympics and beyond.”

The Bolton Indoor tournament forms part of the International Tennis Federation’s UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour and is the second of nine world ranking wheelchair tennis tournaments to be held in Great Britain in 2020. Play at Bolton Indoor begins at 9.00am each day.

Have You Tried Virtual Grit Yet? – Bolton Arena Gym

At the start of 2020, we introduced virtual Les Mills Grit into our fitness timetable. Over the last month, we’ve received extremely positive feedback from new members to frequent class users. As such, we’ve now trebled the number of Les Mills Grit classes across our weekly fitness timetable.

What is Les Mills Grit? 

Grit is a 30-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout, designed to improve strength, cardiovascular fitness and build lean muscle. This workout uses barbell, weight plate and bodyweight exercises to blast all major muscle groups. Les Mills Grit takes cutting-edge HIIT and combines it with powerful music and inspirational coaches who will be down on the floor with you, motivating you to go harder to get fit, fast. ”GRIT is the ideal way to get maximum results in minimal time which is perfect for me or anyone else trying to schedule their fitness regime around an already hectic daily schedule. GRIT pushes me to my limits constantly and I never walk out of a class feeling I haven’t worked to my maximum and got the most out of my workout. We all know cardio training can become mundane for both our body and mind and GRIT shakes this up completely.
