Be Inspired – Gym Member Craig Smart

In this month’s edition of Be Inspired, we speak to Craig Smart, a long-term member of Bolton Arena Gym.

Craig first joined Bolton Arena Gym in 2011, two years after having his second open heart surgery due to a condition he has had from birth named Tetralogy of Fallot, a combination of four congenital heart abnormalities.

Aiming to get fit and improve his strength and flexibility, Craig chose to come to Bolton Arena Gym as it is local to his workplace. In 2018, after a brief time away trying out other gyms, Craig returned to the Arena, citing the friendly staff as one of his reasons for doing so. He is now settled into a routine on coming in early around 6:30am and seeing familiar faces each day.

Craig went on to say that “the gym is also a great motivational and release tool. It allows me to have time to myself, to manage my thoughts and gives me something to look forward to. I can take myself away from the stresses of daily life and focus on my fitness.

A recommendation from Craig was to get information from our instructors if you are ever unsure of anything. Craig seeked assurance from our instructors in regards to how hard he should be pushing himself after having a heart operation.

Training at Bolton Arena Gym has helped Craig’s mental toughness, which has led him onto several achievements including dropping his weight from 80kg to 65kg and also participating and succeeding in events such as the Wigan 10k and Manchester Marathon Relay.

In terms of inspiration, Craig is a new father and uses his daughter as inspiration to stay active and healthy as he wants to set a good example to his family, whilst also being able to participate in sport-based activities with her. Another form of inspiration comes from Craig’s wife, former Olympic GB Swimmer, Helen Don-Duncan, who competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympics in backstroke and with her vigorous training schedule e.g. waking up in the early hours of the morning to train, this inspired Craig to follow her lead and do the same. Craig now supports others and introduced a weight loss challenge to his work colleagues.  Approximately 20 staff members took part in the challenge and they collectively lost over 150Ibs over an 8 week period.

Thank you for sharing your story and recovery journey, with us Craig.

An Inspiring Summer Of Sport

August was another record-breaking month of sport!

The Premier League is back with a bang! As well as the action on the pitch, clubs paid over £1billion in transfer fees by the close of the summer transfer window.

And who could not have been inspired by Team GB’s record-breaking performance at Rio, finishing second in the medals table with a staggering 27 golds!

It seems that many of you have been inspired by the Rio Olympics, with an increase in new gym members joining us in August and a surge in interest in our excellent gymnastics programme.

Many gym members were also inspired to enter the Road to Rio gym challenge. The challenge was to cover the distance to Rio on our cardio equipment during the Olympic fortnight. We didn’t quite manage to cover the 9351 miles, but there were some impressive individual performances, with 13 members accumulating over 50,000 moves. Those members were entered into a prize draw and Stuart Van Cuylenburgh was the lucky winner of a Technogym stability ball worth over £200!

We also ran a series of strength challenges and the male and female winners of each challenge were entered into a draw. Sam Ball won the Females’ draw and Oliver Bromley-Davenport won the males’ draw, both of whom win a gift voucher.

If you’ve been inspired by the Summer of Sport to get back into sport and fitness, why not check out www.boltonarena.com to see the sports and activities on offer or call us on 01204 488100.

Still Time To Enjoy Summer Of Sport

It’s been an amazing summer of sport so far!

After mixed fortunes for the home nations in the Euros, home pride was restored when Andy Murray claimed the Wimbledon men’s singles’ title. And then Chris Froome continued the party when he won the Tour de France in fabulous style!

Now, it’s the turn of the Rio Olympics and the chance to see modern legends like superstar runner Usain Bolt and Brit favourite, heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill among the many inspirational performances on offer.

And we’ve had our share of inspiring performances at the Arena in our Summer of Sport!

Martin Jones won our Tour De France gym challenge, covering a staggering 1424km, followed by Jackie Birks (1005km) and Julian Wood (828km). They all now get to enjoy some much needed retail therapy having won Trafford Centre shopping vouchers.

We are now into our Olympic Challenges, where we are challenging our members to combine their efforts to cover the 9.351km to Rio. As well as raising money for charity, members are in with a chance of winning a much sought-after Technogym Active Sitting Ball. If cardio isn’t your thing, why not try our many strength challenges, where there are also lots of spot prizes up for grabs.

Step Into An Active Summer Of Sport

IT’S been a brilliant Summer of Sport so far – and there’s still so much more to come!

We’ve already had some amazing football matches in the Euros with patriotic feelings running high, especially for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Wonder goals have come from players like top scorers Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo and nail-biters in the group stages included a 3-3 draw between Hungary and Poland.

However, now the Euros are over for England you may want to turn your attention to other sporting events over the next few months. Wimbledon has been delighting many with its clutch of major stars vying for honours and lesser-known players giving the performance of their lives. The finals on July 9th and 10th offer special viewing for tennis fans – and I know many tennis fans here at the Arena will be in front of their TV screens then.

The Tour de France gets underway on July 2nd with a chance to marvel at this talented field of international cyclists; by July 24th this year’s champion finally powers through.

For golf fans, the 145th British Open Championships running from July 14th to July 17th in the rugged West of Scotland at Royal Troon provides a fascinating look at the pro’s who make the game look so easy when we know it isn’t!

The long-awaited Rio Olympics has its impressive opening ceremony on August 5th , and just over a week later on August 13th the new football season starts.

Once we have viewed all the new world records and personal best times and performances of the Olympics, it comes to a close on August 21st. . And all the inspiration and athletic prowess of the Paralympics begins with the opening ceremony on September 7th with events finishing on September 18th .

If this remarkable sporting Summer inspires you to get off your couch and into the gym, onto the running track or the tennis court, why not come down to the USN Bolton Arena?

We’ve got our own Tour de France Gym Challenge from July 2nd to 24th when you can see how far you can travel on a bike. You need to register with a TGS key for this and there are spot prizes throughout the challenge, plus a first prize of a £50 voucher, second of a £30 voucher and third prize of a £20 voucher. There’s just never been a better time to get on your bike!
