Bolton Arena is a Lawn Tennis Association High Performance Centre. One of the leading centres in the UK, the Arena provides a very competitive tennis environment with a physical conditioning programme that is second to none. The full time squad operates 38 weeks a year, providing a training base for touring professionals and preparing players for the transition from junior to senior tennis. Any players of National standard are welcome to train with the squad, for any length of time, to suit their circumstances.
Every player has a personalised long term development programme to help them reach their potential and to suit their particular style of play. We also provide regular fitness screening, continual monitoring and individual biomechanical analysis.
Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE)
Bolton Arena is an accredited venue for the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE). The scheme gives young players the chance to join a tennis squad, get 12 hours of free high quality training per week, whilst continuing their education. The scheme gives players the chance to achieve formal qualifications, such as NVQ3 in Achieving Excellence in Sporting Performance, Tennis UKCC Level 1 and 2 in Coaching, Communication Key Skills Level 2 and Application of Number Key Skills Level 2.
On completion of the scheme, players may be able to advance to higher education in UK universities, gain a tennis scholarship at a university in the United States or embark on a career in professional tennis as a coach or player. The scheme is fully endorsed by the LTA. It is also funded by the LTA and Learning and Skills Council (LSC).
Scholarship squad
The scholarship squad is aimed at players aged 11-18 years who wish to combine study, GCSE to A Level, with a first class tennis programme. Bolton Arena has linked with Rivington & Blackrod High School to offer a flexible education package allowing serious players the opportunity of up to 3 hours of tennis per day and 1 hour of physical conditioning. The school is located only 10 minutes drive from Bolton Arena and has an excellent record of academic achievement.
All players on the scholarship squad will have a personal tutor to monitor their studies and have access to a Specialist Learning Centre. Accommodation with host families is available for players who live too far away to commute daily. Players of National standard are welcome to apply to join the Scholarship squad.
