Find Your Fitness In 2017

If 2016 wasn’t your year, let us help you achieve all your fitness goals in 2017.

We’ve incorporated a whole host of brand new activities to make sure that there’s something for everyone. You will truly be able to find your fitness in 2017.

We’ve always aimed to give members more for their money. Market leading studio classes, Boxfit sessions, 1:1 sessions, personalised programmes and sauna and steam are just some of the activities available in your membership. Not content with that we’ve added more!

One of the first activities to launch last November was our “Couch To 5K” running group. The idea behind the group was to support members that had never run before or struggled with running, to get them to a standard where they could complete a 5K run. This culminated in members taking part in the Bolton park run on 17th December. Due to the current wintry conditions the group has now been postponed until early March.

The same will happen with Bootcamp. Although there was great demand for something a bit tougher, the ice cold temperatures seemed to put people off during the trial phase.  Because of this Bootcamp will also return in March 2017.

The walking group also proved very popular. Over 10 members took part in the last walk of 2016. Monthly walks are planned going forward with the first taking place on 19th January 2017.

Boogie Bounce is back as a permanent fixture on our studio timetable. The brand new class has taken the fitness industry by storm over the last few month’s. The class has proved very popular so if you’d like to try it make sure you get yourself booked on in advance.

Boogie Bounce

If getting that six pack you’ve always wanted is at the top of the list for 2017, we have a session just for you…15 Minute Abs! No booking required just make sure that you’re by the stretch zone at 7:45am, 10:45am, 1:15pm or 4:15pm (Mon – Fri) and get ready for a tough core workout.

If you’re struggling with motivation to train by yourself, get down to one of our coffee mornings and you could meet your training partner. Training with someone else helps to keep you on track.

As you can see there are plenty of activities for all. You can see a full list of what’s available as part of your membership here.

If you’d like anymore information on any of our new activities, get in touch by calling 01204 488104. You can also leave us a suggestion about a new activity you would like to see at the Arena via the enquiry form here.

Summit Office

Discussion: Shoulder Impingement

Over the coming months Arena based business Summit Physio will be going over a number of common injuries and how to avoid them. This month they highlight shoulder impingement’s…

A recent study investigated whether a specific exercise strategy improved levels of shoulder function and experienced pain more than unspecific exercises in a population of patients derived from the waiting list for surgery that had been presenting subacromial impingement syndrome (SIS) for six months or more. Moreover, it was investigated if this specific exercise strategy was subsequently able to reduce the need for arthroscopic subacromial decompression.

Shoulder Impingement 2

The specific exercise group was treated according to a protocol based on recent literature, consisting of eccentric rotator cuff training and training of the scapula stabilizing muscles. The control group received unspecific exercises that had only a very limited effect.

The specific exercise group improved significantly more than the control group. A significantly lower proportion of patients receiving specific exercises (20%, vs. 63% receiving unspecific exercises) still chose surgery after completing the rehabilitation protocol.

Meet The Staff: Oliver Waugh-Swain

NAME: Oliver Waugh-Swain

AGE: 24

WORK TITLE: Fitness Instructor

WHAT DOES YOUR WORK INVOLVE: The role I have at the gym involves leading classes, taking individual sessions, planning a structured programme specific to the gym public’s needs/ goals. Other roles within the centre involve making sure to keep a high standard in the gym, from a cleaning aspect and maintenance level.

HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR: It would have to be the other role I work alongside being a Fitness Instructor, which is Head of Mini Tennis for Strength & Conditioning for Bolton Arena, a role which I feel extremely proud to be a part of in such a great facility. From a personal highlight, it would be completing the London Marathon at 20 years old, raising over £1400 for charity, and being part of such an inspiring event.

SPECIAL WORK CHALLENGESThe most common challenge I come across, is the understanding reality of how much hard work and dedication goes towards achieving a set goal. For example there is more to think about when setting a target of training for yourself. Key factors relating are, nutrition, sleep and lifestyle choices which play a big part in how quickly the goal soon becomes. But with managing this effectively and having a supportive network, there is opportunity to enjoy the journey, not just the finish line.

FUTURE PLANS: I am currently working towards my UKSCA Accreditation within Strength & Conditioning. My plans within the fitness sector are to improve my experience in a variety of areas, which can help towards assisting the general public in their chosen specific goals. I feel by attending CPD courses, and immersing myself in the ever evolving industry, it is vital to keep up to date with exercise prescription & improving coaching skills.

BEST THING ABOUT WORKING AT THE ARENA: The facilities and upkeep play a big part in my involvement at the centre, the environment of staff throughout different departments also make it a friendly/ enjoyable workplace to be part of. I’m career driven, and the arena is no different, constantly evolving, finding ways to keep its high standard of facility.

Activity Update

At the start of November we launched a range of new activities to help members get the most out of their membership and they certainly seem to have had an impact!

The first activity to take place was our Couch to 5K running group, which started on Wednesday 26th October. The group had a slow start, but now in its fourth week, numbers have risen and a healthy group regularly attend. If you want to hit the ground running in 2017, this group is definitely for you.

15 Minute Abs has proven to be a success. Throughout the day staff put on a grueling core workout in the stretch zone. There’s no need to book so next time you’re in the gym, join in!

The biggest hit of the new activities seems to be Boogie Bounce. This brand new studio class sees participants bouncing and dancing on a trampoline! It’s so popular we have a waiting list for our next class. Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect from a class.

We also put on a coffee morning, which proved to be a great way for members to get together and make new friends.

There’s still a couple of activities yet to start. On Saturday 19th November, at 8am, we will be hosting our very first Bootcamp. If you’re looking for something more intense, this is definitely for you. This can be booked online.

The first of our walking groups will debut on Friday 25th November leaving at 10.30am. The group will be meeting in the car park on Lever Park Avenue Horwich (situated almost opposite Rivington and Blackrod High School BL6 7SE). Members MUST speak with a member of the gym team to book a place and fill in the necessary paperwork before hand.

Suitable clothes must be worn as irrespective of the weather (unless snow or ice!). Level of fitness must be suitable to walk at a brisk pace for up to 3.5 hours.

We’ve also had a Technogym challenge happening in the gym. Two teams compete against each other to see who can collect the most moves. So if you’re feeling competitive, ask a member of staff and join in. The challenge finishes on the 25th November. As a club we’ve reached over 250,000 moves!

If you’d like anymore information on any of the activities speak to a member of the gym team or call 01204 488118.
