Meet The Staff: Sue Hayes
NAME: Sue Hayes
JOB: Arena Programme Manager
CAREER PATH: I was sporty as a child and especially loved swimming and running. I represented the county at hockey and swimming and kept these on at university. I went to Leeds University to train as a PE teacher and then worked in a school in West Cumbria for 12 years before going to Australia and Tasmania for a year teaching PE and outdoor pursuits. I returned to West Cumbria briefly before a career change into lecturing in sports science. I lectured at Runshaw College and then Bolton College before coming to the Bolton Arena.
WHAT SPORTS DO YOU STILL TAKE PART IN? I got involved in triathlons at one point and represented England and Great Britain. These days I am still cycling and swimming, although not running. I still, however, love taking our two border collies for walks each day around the Horwich area where we live.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE? My overall aim is to get as many people as possible taking part in sport and enjoying it. I don’t want people to think of sport and exercise like medicine or a prescription but to do it because they love it. So, I manage a very good team and together we put on programmes for various groups of people, like those with disabilities including from special needs’ schools. We run sessions for Parkinson’s Disease and neuro-related conditions. I also manage the gymnastics and football programmes. Aside from this, I have strategic work around health for Bolton and work on developing new partnerships and commission opportunities for the Arena.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT YOUR JOB? I really enjoy all the creative sides of it – thinking of new ideas, trying out new things and thinking outside the box. I love helping people to enjoy sport and exercise and enjoy that buzz – just as I do!
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING AT BOLTON ARENA? I enjoy seeing people get the best out of their visits here. And I love the staff and the crack with them! I couldn’t work on my own in an office and I really enjoy everyone’s company.
